Fracking & It’s Impact on Plumbing
AAP Home Services provides plumbing services in Riverside and throughout Southern California. Our expertise includes slab leaks, and other plumbing leaks that are difficult to detect. In recent years AAP has had many customers call in with plumbing problems and concerns that may be attributed to fracking. What is fracking, and how does the practice of fracking impact your plumbing pipes? Here’s what you need to know:
What is Fracking?
Fracking is a process used to access oil and gas deep beneath the earth’s surface. Formally called “hydraulic fracturing,” fracking utilizes a highly pressurized mixture of water, sand and chemicals to drill into shale rock in order to release the natural gases. This process has helped our country gain access to a valuable fuel resource, helped to lower previously inflated gas prices, and allows us to generate electricity with smaller CO2 emissions. However, despite these benefits there are noted risks that come with the fracking process.
Fracking and Earthquakes
Fracking is criticized by many environmentalists as contributing to air and water pollution, as well as global warming. In addition, as fracking breaks up rock and releases the gases, this movement causes small tremors. Though scientists are still studying fracking to determine its impact on the earth, there is a strong correlation between fracking and earthquakes. While Southern California has long been known as an area with a significant amount of seismic activity, we have seen an increase since fracking has become more common practice.
Fracking & Slab Leaks
What does fracking have to do with your plumbing? When a home is built and plumbing pipes are installed, there needs to be precise fit to avoid any leaking. However, any seismic movement puts plumbing pipes at risk. The added pressure of any movement can cause pipes to disconnect or fracture and begin to leak. Even small tremors can have a big impact on your plumbing pipes and cause slab leaks.
